Currently Reading: Book Review Series – The Break and Some Kind Of Wonderful Review

Currently Reading: Book Review Series is a new addition to the blog and will happen every two books. I wanted to add it both for my blog and for myself, to force myself to actually sit down and read as I rarely get time to sit and read for ages.

So here is born the Currently Reading: Book Review Series which I’m very much hoping will carry on throughout the whole year! I read one book in January and one in February so I now have The Break by Marian Keyes Book Review and Some Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher Book Review.

I read the majority of my books on my Kindle, as my Mum has one and just shares everything with me that she gets which is fab for me. Whilst I do like feeling the pages between my fingers (and not to mention books take better pictures) I love the convenience of a Kindle and the ease of having them added for me instantly!

The Break by Marian Keys Review

Marian Keyes is an author I got into because my Mum loves her and we’ve read the majority of the books she has written. She’s absolutely hilarious and the fact that she’s Irish and writes Irish characters just adds to the hilarity as the phrases and tone of voice you read it in are that bit funnier. She has a knack for bringing an air of humour to even sad situations which just makes her stories what they are. I would recommend any Marian Keyes book too anyone as she writes so beautifully every time. But I’m here to talk about The Break.

The Break is about Amy, the Mother of an unconventional family (i.e. not your typical parents and two kids) in Ireland. she works in PR and is married to Hugh, who she has been with for 14 years when he develops depression and decides he wants to up and leave for six months and go travelling. He wants a Ross and Rachael style “we were on a break” break from their relationship, a free pass if you like, during this time, for both of them and plans to return as if nothing happened afterwards. This happens early on in the story and you follow Amy through her life during this time as she adjusts and comes to terms with the drastic change in her life, which of course is not without it’s bumps on the road.

Her extended dysfunctional family adds hilarity and drama to the situation and you learn to love every character in their own way. All three of her daughters couldn’t be more different but they all compliment each other and the story line. One of her daughters is YouTube famous and she talks about her being sent so much fab makeup that she wants to steal which made me chuckle as a beauty blogger!

The story flicks between “before” and “after” which keeps it interesting throughout. The ending of the book is a lovely it ‘all comes together in the end’ kind of ending which always get a thumbs up from me as I hate being left wanting more! A heartfelt and hilarious read which I would recommend to anyone who loves a good rom com. Buy it The Break here from Amazon.

Some Kind of Wonderful by Giovanna Fletcher

I’m drawn to Giovanna Fletcher as an author as she is one my favourite celebrity Mum’s for a multitude of reasons, one being that she’s married to one my fave boyband members Tom Fletcher from McFly who have created the two most gorgeous baby boys and two, because she’s so down to earth and a genuinely lovely person.

I dabbled my foot into the Giovanna waters when I read Christmas with Billy and Me last year without having read the preceding books and I’ve meant to do so ever since. So when Mum said she had sent Some Kind of Wonderful to my Kindle I made it the next on my list after The Break.

This is another one that begins with heartbreak when couple of ten years, Lizzy and Ian, break up when Ian is about to (finally) propose and he decides against it and breaks up with her instead. You follow her on her journey to get over her heartbreak and try and mend her broken heart, not without the help of her wild best friend and (another) unconventional family. Her journey is so relatable as she tries to discover who she is and realises just how much others have shaped who she has become.

The story isn’t one of sadness, even when she’s upset, which is nice and you become invested in her and her family and want to know what happens next in her journey of self discovery. The ending left me wanting to know more though, which I don’t like about books as I like a well rounded happily ever after! Maybe it’s leading onto book two..? Well worth picking up though, it’s a heartfelt and enjoyable read. Buy it Some Kind of Wonderful here from Amazon.

Next I want to read One of Us is Lying as it sounds so intriguing and I’ve heard lots of good things about it!

Have you read any of these books? I’d love to know your thoughts or any recommendations of what to read next in the comments below!

Thanks so much for reading!

Haven’t read either of those. I just started reading The Talisman by Stephen King & Peter Straub. Again. I’ve read this book a couple times already as it’s one of my favorites. I also have Bazaar of Bad Dreams by Stephen King waiting for me to finally read. I mainly read horror novels… and mainly just Stephen King as he’s been my favorite author since I was in junior high.

I like the sound of these. I really need to read giovanna’s newest one as her others are brilliant.
One of us is lying was one of the best books I read last year and if the kindle price is the same as when I bought it, it’s a bargain.
