The L’Oréal Infallible Range has been around for a while but now that the Total Cover addition has hit the shops I’ve seen it advertised everywhere.
L’Oréal is currently on offer for 3 for 2 with a free Foundation Blender on top of the offer at both Boots and Superdrug so I decided to give it a go.
The Total Cover Foundation is a new addition to the Infallible range and said to do exactly that – cover everything. A high coverage with a matte finish, I was so intrigued to see how this performed.
The Mattifying Primer is not as new but I thought I would try them both together seeing as they were on offer and I am so oily I need all the help I can get on the mattifying front!
I’ve put them to the test and I am ready to give them a review!
So first up, the Mattifying Primer. It has standard silicone feel that squeezes out of a thin nozzle. It applies nicely and doesn’t feel greasy at all. It doesn’t however, blur my pores or fine lines, it just provides a smooth base for applying makeup. This costs £7.99.
Next up, the Foundation Blender. It’s a black sponge with a flat side and pointed edge. It’s quite firm and bulks out when dampened. This did not apply foundation well at all! It didn’t smooth it down it left it patchy and weird and I had to run to the bathroom to quickly wet my trusty Real Techniques Blender to sort my face out before it all set dry. A disappointing no to the Blender! At least it was free!
Finally, the Total Cover Foundation. I got this in the lightest colour they had in the shop – number 9 Light Sand. It has a mousse like thick texture which spreads quite a way across the face. It dries quite fast so you need to work quickly with it to smooth it over.
It definitely has a matte finish and it’s fairly smooth but it does settle into my lines, particularly on my forehead and chin! It also isn’t total cover on first application, I needed to go in with more foundation to cover the redness on my cheeks.
My pores are super obvious when using this which is a disappointment, but a bonus is that it doesn’t feel heavy like you would expect from a full coverage foundation. I don’t feel like my skin is being suffocated by it.
I wouldn’t say it is particularly drying but my skin is mostly oily with dry cheeks (the dryness can be seen when applying my blush or highlighter) and this hasn’t dried me out, but I can’t comment how it would perform on really dry skin.
In terms of being matte, I needed a slight de-grease top-up by lunch time but could have done without if need be. If I was going out after work I would definitely need a top-up as my oily bits came through. By the end of the day it was a total greasy mess and it had gone really patchy all over my face! So longevity isn’t really here with this foundation if you need something to last all day.
If you have any redness, dark spots etc you need covering up then I would say this is full coverage but you will need to apply a second layer to your most noticeable bits to get this coverage but it does provide it eventually.
The foundation costs £9.99 which is a good price for a full coverage drug store foundation. The packaging isn’t particularly exciting, a standard plastic black and clear tube but this does mean you can get the most out of a tube opposed to a glass bottle which is hard to finish.
In the campaign for this they showed this covering up half the face of several people with different skin types – one with tattoos, one with redness, and one with dark spots. They also used a male model for this campaign which is super cool for L’Oréal to do!
Would I buy this again? No. Would I continue using what I’ve got? Yes, it isn’t a total disaster that I will throw it away.
So overall, I don’t think it is a particularly bad product, I just wouldn’t re-purchase.
