Makeup Revolution Retro Luxe Matte Liquid Lip Kit – Review and Swatches

Makeup Revolution are a brand that provide inexpensive dupes for higher end products and usually quality products for the price you pay.

The hype around these liquid lip kits appeared out of nowhere and everyone wanted to get their hands on them as dupes for the hard to get Kylie Lip Kits.

It took a couple of trips to my two local Superdrug’s until these were in stock, and when some finally appeared the colour selection wasn’t great but I picked one up I thought I might wear and couldn’t wait to test it out.

In this very familiar looking “kit” you get a liquid lip colour and a matching lip liner. The lip colour is a decent size tube, with a clear tube displaying the colour and a matte  rose gold lid, which is of course always blogger approved. The lip liner is matte black packaging with gold branding and a coloured tip.

The colour I chose was Reign which on the packaging looks like a nude pink, but on application it’s very much a rose pink colour.

I applied the lip liner first. It has a soft creamy texture and glides nicely on the lips with no pulling or tugging. So far so good.

The lip colour dons a straight doe foot applicator which made for easy application. You can easily draw a perfect line around the edges and fill in easily in the middle without making a mess. It dries almost instantly into a matte finish. Again, so far so good.

However, this is where it all goes pear shaped, as soon as it was applied I could feel it on my lips it felt really heavy. I was very aware it was there, almost like a film over my lips. I was struggling to describe how it felt and then I was discussing it with Rachael from Helpless Whilst Drying and she described it as cakey and that’s very much what it was.

I could feel it on my lips for the rest of the day and it went patchy and horrible when I ate any food. This is very contrary to other reviews I’ve read (bar Rachael’s) and I am very much in the minority with this opinion but at least I am not the only one!

It was very uncomfortable and not nice to wear at all. I am so glad I decided to only get one to try before investing in other colours.

At £6 it is cheap for a drugstore product, considering you get 2 products for that price making them £3 each, but I still think that was £6 wasted. I’m so gutted I didn’t like this as I really wanted too and there are some lovely colours in the range.

To be fair I will re-use the lip liner as it applies lovely, but I’m not even sure whether it sharpens or winds up as I have heard of others having this issue so we shall see what happens with that.

I have also never tried the Kylie Lip Kits so can’t comment on how they compare, but all I know is that I won’t be re-using this again!

Have you tried this lip kit yet? What did you think to it? I’d love to know in the comments below!
