My usual makeup brush cleaning routine involves anti-bacterial soap and a flannel/wash cloth (whatever you call it) which does the trick nicely and cleans my brushes thoroughly.
I usually end up using a couple of wash cloths and then you have to wait for them to dry before putting them in the laundry and it’s a bit of a pain, so when I saw this nifty little palette I thought this could be the answer to my prayers!
This cleansing palette by Real Techniques is a rubber hand held palette that you can swirl your brushes on to clean all the makeup off. I’ve used it a couple of times now and this is what I thought –
It has three sections with raised dots and crosses in 3 varied sizes all the way along to cleanse different sized brushes. It also came with two sample sachets of the brush cleansing gel.
So you pop some of the gel in the palette with some hot water and swirl your brushes over the palette to supposedly give it a deep clean. You can probably see where I’m going here with the supposedly…
The palette is good in that the water turns instantly brown from your makeup so you can see it is cleaning, but when you inspect the brush there is still makeup residue on the end. When I cleanse using my trusty wash clothes the brushes are always squeaky clean.
The handle on the back is clever but when you put the water the gel/soap in you need two hands so trying to balance it in the sink if problematic as it doesn’t’ sit straight due to the handle. I’d probably prefer it to be flat.
It is quite good for sponges as it gets them clean but it has ruined my Real Techniques sponge by ripping a few (small) chunks out the edge! Not sure if I’m too harsh when cleaning it or what…
The cleansing gel isn’t worth buying as I find my brushes feel and look cleaner sticking with my good old anti-bac handwash and it’s a lot cheaper.
Now that I have this palette I only use one flannel instead of two and it’s good for getting the main bulk of the makeup off the brush but the flannel is definitely better to properly cleanse. The pair together is better than using just flannels.
It’s also meant to be a drying station for your brushes but I own too many for them to all fit on the palette!
This is £12.99 in Boots and I saw it in TK Maxx for £9.99 the other day, but as we know TK can be a bit hit and miss!
I will continue to use this palette now I own it, but would I recommend you buy it? Probably not…
