So I’ve recently celebrated my blogs first birthday and with that in mind I wanted to share the things I’ve come to learn and realise about blogging and the blogging community in general.
It’s been an amazing journey deciding how I want my blog, what direction I want it to head in and how I want it to look. Its such a good feeling when you’re really pleased with a post or a new look or theme but every journey has ups and downs and I wanted to share mine with you.
1. Don’t compare yourself to others
This is not healthy nor does it help you, your well being or your blog! Your blog is your little corner of the internet and nobody elses’, so do you and don’t worry about other people. Followers will love you for your individuality, not because you are doing the same as everyone else, at least I’d like to think so anyway!!
The more you compare others success, the worse you will feel about yourself. Go at your own pace and do it how you want to, it isn’t a race! You will feel much happier forgetting how others are doing and celebrate their successes instead of envying them.
Some people blog full time, some work and some blog whilst at uni so the amount of time people can spend on blogging really varies, there is no way any one person has the same circumstances as somebody else!
2. People will be bitchy
You are always going to get some bitching and nastiness going on, especially when you throw so many females into one hobby, but just learn to let it go over your head and not bother you, they’re behind a computer screen after all, and are probably not brave or bold enough to say things like that in person!
I’ve been lucky enough to only experience one horrible comment on my blog, to which I didn’t respond and just removed it, I don’t need negativity on my posts! I was also subject to a very passive aggressive comment on Twitter the parties of which claim to be really nice and caring and somehow have so many followers, but as is life, just let it go over your head!
That being said…
3. The blogging community are so lovely
99% of fellow bloggers are so lovely, will leave lovely comments and celebrate milestones and successes with you! I’ve made friends with so many lovely people who can make me smile with just one comment and it’s such a lovely community to be a part of.
4. You will buy a lot more makeup
Since I started blogging I’ve spent SO much more money on makeup because I’ve wanted to do a post on the latest product or a blog post has convinced me to buy it or it’s just too pretty.. the justifications are endless! I have however managed to slow this down a TAD and don’t rush out to buy something new just for the sake of a blog post!
5. Blogging/Instagram/Twitter will consume you
I’m always thinking about when I’m going to next post on Insta or Twitter and post ideas are constantly popping into my head and I have to write them down on my phone in an ever growing list or I will forget! It’s crazy how much you think about social media or blogging and it makes me wander what I ever thought about before.
6. You will be jealous of people who can buy more makeup
This kind of relates to my first point, but there will be people out there with way more money than you, different circumstances and situations who can buy way more things than you. Obviously the name of my blog suggests that I am not able to do that and I think it’s been going okay for me so far, but it doesn’t stop me lusting after some people’s makeup stash!
7. Your pictures will be rubbish at first…
My pictures were definitely shocking when I first started but you build up your skill as time goes on and I can’t ever see me stopping learning the art of photography! Never before did I think natural or electric lighting would have a huge difference, flatlays, angles, preventing shadows, the list is endless!
8. You will learn a lot about technical internet things
I didn’t have a clue what to do with WordPress when I first started and my seo knowledge was very limited (I knew a little about it from marketing meetings at work but never really took it in) and I really have learnt a lot in my first year of being a blogger!
9. You should post in line with your blogging theme
I’m not talking an Instagram theme here (bugger that nonsense who can be bothered with that?!) I’m talking about how you want you blog to come across. Take mine, beauty on a budget, it wouldn’t be true to my theme if I posted about high end brands all of the time (not that I would as I can’t afford it) and if I do it’s as a real treat. Same goes for products from brands – if it doesn’t fit your blog, don’t accept it for the sake of it being free.
10. You need really good time management
This is something I learnt the hard way, it is really difficult to find a flow that works well and fits into your schedule. It isn’t fun stressing out to post on time as the post won’t be a good as you want it to be. I would rather post a day late than rush it! I also try and schedule posts in advance so there is no last minute rush.
So that’s my list of experience gained during my first year of blogging! Do you agree or disagree or have any tips on how to overcome them? Let me know below I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you so much for reading!

Haha #4 is true. I think just READING blogs or watching YT will do that though!
I toyed with reshooting some of my earlier photos because they were so horrendous, but then I realize it shows progression, and it’s ok!
Great list of lessons. Very important to keep things in perspective. 🙂
