Just another Mani Monday! Happy Monday lovelies, it’s been a while since I did a nail varnish review so I thought I would kick off with my first one of the year.
Today I have the Rimmel Super Gel in the shade Venus, which is Rimmel’s answer to the drugstore hype around gel polishes without the need for a UV lamp. I have used this multiple times now so have a good idea of whether it works now, so be sure to keep reading for a review and swatches!
Venus is a dark deep red and I purchased this before Christmas after seeing it on a colleague and loving it. I thought it would be a perfect shade for the festive season and beyond into winter.
The polish promises up to 14 days wear before chipping without the need for a UV light. 14 days! I’ve never had a salon mani that lasts 14 days without chipping so that’s a lot to live up to! So lets get down to how well it works.
SWATCHES
I had to add a gold accent nail, cos I was bored of block colour!
APPLICATION
The brush is the perfect rounded shape to allow perfect lines around the cuticles and wide enough to cover the whole nail neatly. That box is ticked.
DRYING TIME
It dries quite quickly which means from first stroke to dry is about max half an hour which is good.
FINISH
The polish applies so shiny, exactly what you’d expect from a gel polish. It’s also super pigmented and you get great colour pay off from two coats. Another box ticked.
LASTING POWER
This is unfortunately where it falls at the last hurdle! This polish does not last 14 HOURS without chipping, let alone 14 days!! There is absolutely no fricking way this would last on anyone unless they were sat still for 14 days straight and literally did not touch anything.
This is the second Super Gel polish I’ve had, the first one of which I reviewed here where I used the accompanying top coat which subsequently went very gloopy and unusable so that’s now in the bin. I used a Sally Hansen Anti Chip Top Coat and it had exactly the same results as using the Rimmel top coat.
I also tried this on my toes, on which polish lasts a good 2-3 weeks, and it chipped within the first week.
OVERALL
So after having two colours from the range, months apart, they clearly haven’t gotten any better so I won’t buy anything else Super Gel especially for £6. I just wish brands would be honest about how long products actually last!
This is only good if you want a shiny gel looking mani that you only need to last a few hours, like a night out. Because trust me it won’t last much longer!
My advice? Don’t waste your money!
Have you had any experience with this polish? I’d love to know below!

Its a lovely shiny finish too! But it just doesn’t last!

I feel like it’s really hard to find a nail polish that does last well, or maybe that’s just a me problem, I’m not sure.
Sophie in Wonderland says
I totally agree with you I’m exactly the same!! Im yet to find one that doesn’t chip straight away!
Nicole says
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with that problem. The only brand that I’ve tried that didn’t chip with in the first day on me is Julep.
Sophie in Wonderland says
Me too!! Ooh where is that from I’ve not heard of it?!
Nicole says
I got mine as a gift but I know they sell that brand on Amazon and at Sephora I believe. I just realized that they may not sell that brand in the UK though, I’m really not sure.
Sophie in Wonderland says
Ooh ok, I’ll definitely have to check it out!

How disappointing about the wear time! It makes me mad, all these non-UV “gel” polishes being released that are not ANY different from conventional polishes, but the companies charge more money!
Try the Essie one if you haven’t (the twisty bottles), I =found it lasted really well.
Sophie in Wonderland says
I know tell me about it!! It annoys me no end!! That is next on my list to try! I hope its good!

Lovely shade and thanks for the honest review. I usually get sucked in with gorgeous shades like this one but I would also want my polish to last long! Xx

This is such a lovely shade ! If you’re looking for a nail polish in a strong red like that we really recommend Crabtree and Eveleyn nail polish . It’s not sold to have a gel effect although we think it does! Xx
