Trying to live a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle is becoming more a prominent goal, but it can be tricky to know how to incorporate changes that suit your way of living. I am a firm believer that any small step you can make, however tiny, matters, and that introducing small tweaks to your routine as they suit you can help even in little ways. I’ve rounded up a number of more sustainable swaps you can make to your beauty routine to help you along the way to becoming a little more eco-conscious and living a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Refillable soaps or shower gels
There are a number of brands out there now that sell refill pouches for everyday toiletries which mean less plastic and less single use waste.
One of my favourites is the L’Occitane Forever Bottle*, that can be refilled with their selection of shower gels and soaps, like this Almond Shower Oil refill* which uses 65-90% less plastic compared to their standard containers and can be recycled. Get yours here.*
Another option is the Nivea Eco Refill*, which uses soap tablets that you dilute in water to create your hand soap. The tablets come in various scents and are housed in biodegradable packaging meaning no plastic waste, the tablets use 97% naturally derived ingredients (check Nivea website for more details) whilst the bottle can be re-used again and again and is made from recyclable materials. Get it here.
Skincare refills
To cut out single use waste, a lot of brands are providing refills for their most popular skincare products now.
A fave of mine of the Dermalogica daily microfoliant refill*, which you decant into your empty daily microfoliant bottle and recycle the packet (you have to check local guidelines to find out where) but single use plastic is cut out and your fave product is alll topped up! Get it here.*
Another great option (not pictured) is the Fenty Skin Hydra Vizor Refill*, which can just be popped into the housing of your empty moisturiser, reducing the amount single use plastic that goes in the bin. It’s also vegan and the outer packaging is fully recyclable. Win win! Get it here.*
Solid bars
Whether it’s cleanser or shampoo, brands are branching out to provide solid bars that have no plastic waste, with recyclable packaging and natural ingredients.
The Nivea Face Cleansing Magic Bar* has a vegan formula with 99% natural origin ingredients. You can recycle the outer packaging and it’s perfect for travel as there’s no liquid and no mess! Get it here.*
The Garnier Ultimate Blends Shampoo Bar* = zero plastic waste, with 94% plant based ingredients that are cruelty free certified. You can even get a tin holder for them so they don’t get messy and there’s loads of choices for different hair types. What more could you want! Get it here.*
Re-useable makeup remover cloths
I couldn’t do a sustainable beauty swaps post without featuring my go to makeup remover – re-useable cloths. These are amazing at removing makeup, both with or without a cleanser (not so much on the eyes, mainly the face!) and save on a huge amount of single use cotton pads. I can’t get on personally with re-useable pads, but find these washable cloths a life saver when it comes to removing makeup. Just remove makeup, wash with the rest of your laundry, try and re-use – voila! Get these Magnitone cloths here.*
So that’s my roundup of sustainable beauty swaps you can make to your routine – what do you use or do what I’ve missed that I could incorporate? Please give me all the inspo!
